BOOK & VIDEO DATABASES

Good information is crucial to any activity or interest, and the lack of such data on Soviet or Russian Railways has long been a problem.  Nowadays there is a lot of information available, but how do you find it ? Look in the Databases here.

VIDEO DATABASE

Video can sometimes provide additional information over what is available from books, but is especially useful for getting the feel of the rail system and for incidentals. As a Video Producer, (Hillsidefilms) I cannot comment on our own products, but I can say that there are many excellent videos from a wide variety of sources. Some are available on PAL/NTSC. Others only seem to be available on one format or the other.

Comments/Reviews Etc

Railfilms - Baltic Coast Express -  produced c1991 at the time the Baltic States were about to break away from the Soviet Union. The accent is heavily on the Baltic Coast steam steam railtour, with some excellent run pasts. About half the film is in Poland, and the balance in the Baltic States ending up in Leningrad, where an OV makes a genteel run past.

report from Robert Hendry

Castle Films  - Railways of Russia  Castle video  Chris White write "this was (I think) an episode in a TV series entitled Russia:  The Missing Years.  Excellent archival footage from 1900-on; I'm frustrated that I've not found an NTSC source or contact. Robert Hendry - Yes, it is from the Missing Years series. Outstanding film from formerly closed Soviet archives with very good material from the Stalinist period

Soviet Railways in Action No 1 Hillside Publishing; dramatic steam railtour action (Su, L, Er and P36 classes) and narrow gauge, but the main emphasis is on day-to-day passenger and freight services, inc industrial locos, freight only lines and WORKING 0-10-0 “Erka” steam in the Eastern Ukraine in 2000/2001.

Soviet Railways in Action No 2 Hillside Publishing; steam railtour action with SO17 2-10-0; outline history of the evolution of Czarist railways and Railway Bonds, WW2 film of Partisan operations behind Nazi lines, inc dramatic wrecking sequences of an American built Pershing 2-8-0, Model Railways, CKD built diesel switchers ChME2, ChME3, ChME5,  detailed portrait of railways and tramways of the industrial Donbass, Donetsk Rail Museum and the Soviet 2-10-2 story.  Released Nov 2002

Vol 3 Russia  - Caucasus & Black Sea  New Horizons   A good record of an early Steam Railtour to this beautiful part of the former Soviet Union.

Railwaymen's Holiday records the 80th anniversary celebration of Latvian Railways, focusing on steam fan trips behind L Class  0312.  It was filmed with off-the-shelf video equipment by Peter Bergs and his step-son Marek, but Peter's experience in the famous Pennsylvania State University railfan group shows through.   Report from Chris White (Red Star Railways)

I believe the Machines of Iron items are marketed in the UK through Steam Powered Video;  CW

I'm sure somebody in the UK also distributes NTSC copies of Dave Goodheart's video.   CW

Railways of the USSR  from Lineside Locations. This tape contained some good rolling stock shots as well as the rather eccentric railway museum at Korosten. (Chris White)

Steam in the USSR   possibly from Lineside (an early English/German railtour based around Kiev. Good shots of steam (E, Su,L) and Kiev trams. This may be related to the above tape since Korosten depot also
features  (from Tony Wood)
