It was the largest country in the world, covering more than a sixth of the land surface of the earth. It was an Atheist state with some of the most beautiful churches in the world. Its railways were the busiest on earth, and its armed forces developed an awesome array of weapons, yet such was the secrecy of Soviet life, that it was an Enigma wrapped in a Mystery for decades. With the relaxation of restrictions, travel is much easier, but the countries which make up the former Soviet Union remain little known. In this series of videos, we will look at this remarkable land.

The Russian
Black Sea Fleet
The
Russian Black Sea fleet was established in the days of Catherine the Great, and
for more than 200 years has been the predominant naval force in the region. The
navy’s home port of Sevastopol was “off limits” to foreigners for much of the
Soviet era, and remained so for some years after the Iron Curtain fell, but in
this remarkable video, we see the missile cruisers, submarines, assault ships,
patrol craft, helicopters, planes, and officers and men of the modern Russian
Chernomorskiy Flot (or Black Sea fleet), and a selection of vessels belonging
to the newly formed Ukrainian Navy as well.
Highlights include the last surviving “Sverdlov” class all-gun cruiser,
the Slava class missile cruiser Moskva, “Ropucha” class assault landing
ships discharging armoured personnel carriers and salvo firing close support
rockets, a Varshavyanka class submarine, President Putin of Russia reviewing
the fleet, naval ceremonial and lots more. With
a 58 min running time, this important new film on the armed forces of the
former Soviet Union, covers much that
will be unfamiliar to Western observers. 58
