The Matryoshka doll is the best
known Russian craft items. The wooden “nesting” doll is hand painted to a
colourful design, and is an exquisite work of art in its own right. The top and
bottom halves of the doll separate to reveal another smaller doll inside. There
is be a family likeness, but she will
be quite different from her “mama”. Open this doll, and there will be another
smaller family member inside, and so it continues !
The Russian Matryoshka, or Nesting Doll, as she is often called, is a
descendant of traditional Russian peasant toys made by parents for their
children. In its developed form, it was conceived by S V Malyutin, a celebrated
Russian artist and member of the Marmontov Circle, a 19th century
group of artists and wealthy patrons who believed in developing a Russian
Artistic style based firmly on traditional crafts and ideas.
The Matryoshka doll is normally made of lime or birch, and the wood is
seasoned for several years outdoors before it is ready for turning into
different sized cylinders which will form the individual dolls. The smallest
doll is made first. Each succeeding doll is large enough to contain the
previous doll within its hollowed out interior. Simply to produce the set of
unpainted dolls requires great skill and intuition. The dolls are then primed,
given a base colour, and the artist handpaints an intricate and colourful
pattern on each doll. Sometimes an apprentice paints the basic design, with the
detailed work being carried out by a skilled artist.
The name, “Matryoshka” captures the very spirit of Russia, and of
Russian-ness. It comes from the traditional Russian name Matryona or Matryosha
for Mother, the “shka” (or “ushka”) ending being a traditional Russian form of
endearment.
The Matryoshka doll set never consists of less than three pieces. Five
is common, and the larger sets can contain 10 or even 20 dolls, the last, and
smallest, being solid. Whether displayed as a single doll, or opened out as a
set, the Matryoshka is always bright and cheerful, and will attract attention.
