The ‘Shakespeare’ Route – The SMJ – This is the first detailed exploration of this 70 mile long cross country route, which was called the “Shakespeare Route” by a PR minded boss.  Struggling against hostile powerful neighbours, it was absorbed by the LMS in 1923 and closed by BR between 1949 and 1965, except for a 3 mile section serving an army camp. Using rare archive stills, documents, plans, archive film from the 1920s, and rare footage of the military railway, this video reveals much that has never appeared about the SMJ. For example, it is well known that one of its early engines was an 0-6-6-0 Fairlie that had been intended for Russia, but until this video appeared, no one knew that the engine was an astonishing 10 ft 6ins wide when delivered, and had to have three inches sliced off each side of the footplate, so it could operate !
