From the days of Kievan Rus, more
than 1,000 years ago, to modern times, the Russian people have lived in a harsh
and unforgiving environment, but this has endowed them with immense resilience,
a great sense of fun, and a delight in spectacular decoration. This pervades national life from the
fantastic splendours of St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, through Military
uniforms, to such humble items as kitchen cutting boards or wooden spoons.
For over 70 years, the Soviet Union
was a “Closed Book” to the West, but with the end of the Cold War, more and
more people are discovering the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Russia
and Ukraine. In the West, we live in a world of mass production, and original
hand crafted items command high prices. In Russia and Ukraine, skilled craft
workers still ply the traditional arts of wood-carving, painting, lacquering
and embroidery, taught to them by past generations, to create exquisite
masterpieces.
The Matryoshka doll is the best
known Russian art form, but on our site you will discover exquisite costume
dolls, lacquer boxes, jewellery boxes, spoons, cutting boards, hand painted
eggs and much else.
We know that many people like to
pay by credit card over the Internet, and we have thought about providing this facility,
but if we do so, we will have to charge you a good deal more to cover the
charges that the credit card companies make, and we are not 100% convinced that
someone cannot intercept your card details, so for the time being we are
sticking to the old fashioned but proven method of “snail mail” and cheques
etc.
As many of our items are “one off”,
or in limited quantities, we suggest you e-mail at hendry@hillsidefilms.fsnet.co.uk to confirm availability, and we will let you
know the position. Then you can CLICK HERE for our ORDER FORM, fill that in, and send it off to us.
NOTE – In the Summer months, we may
be on extended buying trips, so if you do not get a prompt reply, please do not
worry. Your cheque will NOT be cashed until we are able to meet your order.
