Until the appearance of the modern chocolate Easter egg,
Easter was traditionally celebrated by hand-painting of poultry eggs or “life
sized” wooden eggs. In Russia, a range of stylized designs appeared, which drew
on traditional art forms, and are nowadays hand-painted on to wooden (birch or
lime) eggs. The Russian egg became a
part of the Easter tradition, and has survived despite decades of State Atheism
during the Soviet Era. In post-Soviet days, some artists have felt able to
emblazon religious motifs on their eggs once again, such as “Christ Arisen”, but
most are purely decorative.
