Hillside Video &  DVD
 British Isles Series

VIDEO
Video production at Hillside Publishing began in 1989, commencing with a 30 minute record of the narrow gauge Southwold Railway which closed as long ago as 1929. Highly acclaimed at the time, it remains THE definitive work on this fascinating line. Two 55-minute “Behind the Scenes”programmes on the Manx Electric and Isle of Man Railway followed, and our most ambitious Narrow gauge programme to date is a 61 min documentary on the Talyllyn Railway in 1948-50 before preservation and exactly 50 years later. Talyllyn 50 was released as a part of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society golden jubilee celebrations in May 2001.

DVD
The Southwold railway had been the first Super-8 cine film produced by Hillside Publishing 25 years ago. IN 1989, it inaugurated the Hillside Video range, and in 2005, the tradition was reinforced as “Rails to Southwold” became the first Hillside title to be released on DVD.

The ‘Shakespeare’ Route – The SMJ – This highly acclaimed video is the first detailed exploration of this hitherto neglected 70 mile long cross country route, which was called the “Shakespeare Route” by a PR minded boss.  Struggling against hostile powerful neighbours throughout its independent existence, it was absorbed by the LMS in 1923 and closed by BR between 1949 and 1965, except for a 3 mile section serving an army camp. Using rare archive stills from Victorian days, documents, plans, unique archive film from the 1920s through to closure as a through route in the 1960s and even rare footage of the military railway, this video provides an intimate portrait of the line, and reveals much that has not even appeared in the written histories of the SMJ. For example, it is well known that one of its early engines was an 0-6-6-0 Fairlie that had been intended for Russia, but until this video appeared, no one knew that the engine was an astonishing 10 ft 6ins wide when delivered, and had to have three inches sliced off each side of the footplate, so it could operate !
