In the 8th Century AD, a race of sea warriors erupted from the rock bound coasts of Scandinavia. Worshipping Odin, and glorying in battle, the Vikings brought fire and pillage to the British Isles. They became the rulers of Normandy and the Czars of Russia.  Nowhere was their impact more marked than in the Isle of Man, which became a Viking state. Although fierce and violent, they formed Parliaments wherever they settled. The Manx parliament, or Tynwald, is the oldest legislative assembly in the World.

As part of the Isle of Man Festival of the Sea at Peel, and sponsored by Pain’s Fireworks, a group of amateur boat builders created a replica Viking ship in less than 4 days, sailed it in the open waters of the Irish Sea, and then said farewell in the traditional Viking SALUTE to a fallen chieftain.

Visit the fiords of Norway, the Viking’s ancient homeland, explore the Viking tradition, learn of King Orry, see the Millennium year Tynwald ceremony in the Isle of Man, and watch the team as they race against the clock to create a sea going Viking Longship in less than 100 hours. See a Viking ship named “Lord of the Seas” and watch her proudly sail out into the restless grey waters of the Irish Sea. Join the Up Hel Ya torch-lit procession, learn of the Viking belief in Odin, the God of Battle, and of Valhalla, and watch the poignant moment as this graceful ship erupts into flame in an age old tribute to the Viking Warriors of long ago.

New Rails for MAN

By the 1990s, the track of the 15.5 mile steam railway between Douglas and Port Erin was giving cause for serious concern. At the same time, the Island’s Victorian sewage system was in need of overhaul, and in an imaginative deal with the railways, the sewage mains were laid beneath the railway line, saving much disruption to road users, in return for which the railway received over 12 miles of brand new track. This important video provides a unique “Behind the Scenes” access to the 2002-2004 relay of 80% of the trackwork, and includes lifting scenes, a footplate ride on the  Contractors loco, the track laying machine at work, trials of the new IMR Ballast Tamper, and trains running on old and new track
